Vascular Malformations

Department of Vascular Malformations

A vascular malformation is an abnormal development of blood vessels. They might be found in the large arteries and veins, in smaller vessels called arterioles and venules, in microscopic capillaries, and/or in the lymphatic channels that carry lymphatic fluid and white blood cells outside of the arteries and veins.

Types

1.Arteriovenous Malformations (AVMs): Abnormal connections between arteries and veins, disrupting normal blood flow.

2.Venous Malformations: Abnormalities in veins, leading to swelling and potential complications.

3.Capillary Malformations: Abnormalities in capillaries, often seen as port-wine stains.

Diagnosis

1.Imaging Studies: Techniques like angiography, MRI, or CT scans help visualize blood vessels and identify abnormal formations.

2.Clinical Assessment: Evaluation of symptoms such as pain, swelling, or neurological deficits.

Treatment

1.Embolization: Blocking abnormal blood vessels using substances like coils or glue.

2.Sclerotherapy: Injecting a substance to cause vessel scarring and closure.

3.Surgery: In some cases, surgical removal or ligation of abnormal vessels may be necessary.
