Refractive Errors
Department of Refractive Errors
Refractive errors are extremely common eye conditions that make your vision blurry. Usually, all you’ll need is a new pair of glasses or contacts to restore your vision. Talk to your eye care specialist about vision correction surgery if you have a refractive error but don’t want to wear corrective lenses.
Types
1.Myopia (Nearsightedness): Difficulty seeing distant objects clearly.
2.Hyperopia (Farsightedness): Difficulty seeing close objects clearly.
3.Astigmatism: Blurred vision due to irregular corneal or lens shape.
4.Presbyopia: Age-related difficulty focusing on close objects.
Diagnosis
1.Eye Exam: Visual acuity test to assess clarity at different distances.
2.Refraction Test: Determines the lens prescription needed for clear vision.
3.Retinoscopy: Evaluates how light reflects off the retina.
Treatment
None Surgery:
- Glasses: Prescribed lenses to correct refractive errors.
- Contact Lenses: Thin lenses placed directly on the eyes for vision correction.
Refractive Surgery:
- LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis): Reshapes cornea with laser.
- PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy): Similar to LASIK but involves corneal surface.
- Phakic Intraocular Lens (IOL) Implants: Surgical implantation of a lens.
