Peripheral Nerve Disorders
Department of Peripheral Nerve Disorders
Peripheral neuropathy is an umbrella term for nerve diseases that affect a specific subdivision of your nervous system. Many different conditions can cause peripheral neuropathy, which means a wide range of symptoms is also possible. Peripheral neuropathy can also affect different body parts, depending on how and why it happens.
Types
1.Entrapment Neuropathies: Compression or pinching of nerves, e.g., carpal tunnel syndrome.
2.Peripheral Nerve Injuries: Trauma causing damage to nerves, leading to dysfunction.
3.Neuromas: Abnormal growth of nerve tissue, often resulting from nerve injury.
Diagnosis
1.Clinical Evaluation: Detailed examination of symptoms, such as pain, weakness, or numbness.
2.Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS) and Electromyography (EMG): Electrophysiological tests to assess nerve function and identify abnormalities.
Treatment
1.Carpal Tunnel Release: Surgical procedure to relieve pressure on the median nerve in carpal tunnel syndrome.
2.Nerve Decompression Surgery: Releasing compressed nerves to alleviate symptoms.
3.Nerve Repair or Grafting: For traumatic injuries, surgical repair or grafting may be performed.
