Gestational Diabetes Screening

Department of Gestational Diabetes Screening

Gestational diabetes is high blood sugar (glucose) that develops during pregnancy and usually disappears after giving birth.

It can happen at any stage of pregnancy, but is more common in the second or third trimester.

It happens when your body cannot produce enough insulin – a hormone that helps control blood sugar levels – to meet your extra needs in pregnancy.

Gestational diabetes can cause problems for you and your baby during pregnancy and after birth. But the risks can be reduced if the condition is detected early and well managed.

Before

Before undergoing Gestational Diabetes Screening during pregnancy, various tests may be recommended to assess blood sugar levels. Common tests include:

1.Fasting Blood Sugar Test: Measures blood sugar levels after an overnight fast, providing an initial assessment of glucose metabolism.

2.Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT):  Involves fasting overnight and then drinking a glucose solution. Blood sugar levels are tested at intervals to assess the body’s ability to metabolize glucose.

Types

1.One-Step Approach (75g OGTT): A single OGTT where the pregnant individual fasts overnight, drinks a glucose solution, and blood sugar levels are measured at intervals.

2.Two-Step Approach (50g Glucose Challenge Test followed by 100g OGTT if needed): The first step involves drinking a glucose solution and measuring blood sugar levels after one hour. If the results are elevated, a second step involves a more extended OGTT for further assessment.

Treatment

Treatment for gestational diabetes includes:

  • Lifestyle changes
  • Blood sugar monitoring
  • Medication, if necessary

Managing your blood sugar levels helps keep you and your baby healthy. Close management can also help you avoid complications during pregnancy and delivery.
