Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor (GIST)

Department of Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor (GIST)

A gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) is a type of tumor that occurs in the gastrointestinal tract, most commonly in the stomach or small intestine. This type of tumor is thought to grow from specialized cells found in the gastrointestinal tract called interstitial cells of Cajal (ICCs) or precursors to these cells. Affected individuals can develop one or more tumors. GISTs are usually found in adults between ages 40 and 70; rarely, children and young adults develop this type of tumor.

Types

1.Spindle Cell GIST: Comprising spindle-shaped cells, most common type.

2.Epithelioid GIST: Comprising epithelioid cells, less common.

3.Mixed GIST: Containing a combination of spindle and epithelioid cells.

Diagnosis

1.Endoscopy or Colonoscopy: Visual examination of the gastrointestinal tract.

2.CT Scan or MRI: Imaging tests to locate and assess tumor size.

3.Biopsy: Removal and analysis of tissue for confirmation.

Treatment

1.Surgery: Surgical removal of the tumor (partial or complete resection).

2.Imatinib (Gleevec): Targeted therapy to inhibit cancer cell growth.

3.Sunitinib (Sutent): Second-line targeted therapy for resistant cases.

4.Radiation Therapy: High-energy rays for localized control (less common).
