Department of Strabismus

Retinopathy is any damage to the retina of the eyes, which may cause vision impairment. Retinopathy often refers to retinal vascular disease, or damage to the retina caused by abnormal blood flow.

Types

1. Diabetic Retinopathy: Affects individuals with diabetes, leading to damage of blood vessels in the retina.

2. Hypertensive Retinopathy: Result of high blood pressure causing damage to retinal blood vessels.

3. Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP): Occurs in premature infants, affecting the developing blood vessels in the retina.

Diagnosis

  • Dilated Eye Exam: Evaluates the retina and blood vessels for signs of damage.
  • Fluorescein Angiography: Uses a dye to highlight blood vessels and assess circulation.
  • Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT): Provides detailed images of retinal layers.

Treatment

1.Diabetic Retinopathy:

  • Laser Therapy: Seals leaking blood vessels (photocoagulation).
  • Anti-VEGF Injections: Inhibits abnormal blood vessel growth.
  • Vitrectomy: Removes blood from the vitreous gel in advanced cases.

2.Hypertensive Retinopathy:

  • Blood Pressure Control: Medication and lifestyle changes.
  • Management of Underlying Conditions: Addressing cardiovascular health.

3.Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP):

  • Monitoring: Regular eye exams to assess progression.
  • Laser Therapy or Cryotherapy: In severe cases to prevent retinal detachment.
