Craniosynostosis

Department of Craniosynostosis

Craniosynostosis is a disorder present at birth in which one or more of the fibrous joints between the bones of your baby’s skull (cranial sutures) close prematurely (fuse), before your baby’s brain is fully formed. Brain growth continues, giving the head a misshapen appearance.

Types

1.Sagittal Synostosis: Premature fusion of the sagittal suture, leading to a long, narrow head shape.

2.Coronal Synostosis: Fusion of one of the coronal sutures, resulting in a flattened forehead and eye asymmetry.

3.Metopic Synostosis: Premature fusion of the metopic suture, causing a triangular-shaped forehead.

4.Lambdoid Synostosis: Fusion of the lambdoid suture, impacting the back of the head.

Diagnosis

1.Clinical Examination: Physical assessment of head shape, skull sutures, and facial features.

2.Imaging Studies: X-rays or CT scans to confirm premature fusion of skull sutures.

Treatment

1.Surgery (Cranial Vault Remodeling): Involves reshaping the skull to correct abnormal head shape.

2.Fronto-Orbital Advancement: Addressing specific skull regions, especially in cases of orbital involvement.

3.Postoperative Helmet Therapy: May be used post-surgery to help maintain the corrected head shape.
