Parkinson’s Disease

Department of Parkinson’s Disease

Parkinson’s disease is a progressive disorder that affects the nervous system and the parts of the body controlled by the nerves. Symptoms start slowly. The first symptom may be a barely noticeable tremor in just one hand. Tremors are common, but the disorder may also cause stiffness or slowing of movement.

In the early stages of Parkinson’s disease, your face may show little or no expression. Your arms may not swing when you walk. Your speech may become soft or slurred. Parkinson’s disease symptoms worsen as your condition progresses over time.

Although Parkinson’s disease can’t be cured, medications might significantly improve your symptoms. Occasionally, your health care provider may suggest surgery to regulate certain regions of your brain and improve your symptoms.

Types

1.Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS): Involves implanting electrodes in specific brain regions, connected to a stimulator device, to regulate abnormal neural activity.

2.Pallidotomy: Surgical lesioning or removal of a portion of the globus pallidus to alleviate symptoms.

3.Thalamotomy: Destruction of a small portion of the thalamus to address tremors.

Diagnosis

1.Clinical Assessment: Diagnosis is primarily based on clinical symptoms, including tremors, bradykinesia, rigidity, and postural instability.

2.Neurological Examination: Assessing motor skills, reflexes, and other neurological functions.

Treatment

1.Medications: Dopamine agonists, levodopa, and other medications are commonly prescribed to manage symptoms.

2.Physical and Occupational Therapy: Exercise and therapy help improve mobility and enhance daily functioning.

3.Speech Therapy: Addresses speech and swallowing difficulties common in Parkinson’s disease.
