Spinal Cord Tumors

Department of Spinal Cord Tumors

A spinal tumor is a growth that develops within your spinal canal or within the bones of your spine. A spinal cord tumor, also called an intradural tumor, is a spinal tumor that that begins within the spinal cord or the covering of the spinal cord (dura). A tumor that affects the bones of the spine (vertebrae) is called a vertebral tumor.

Spinal cord tumors may be classified as one of three different types depending on where they occur relative to the protective membranes of the spinal cord.

Types

1.Intramedullary Tumors: These originate within the spinal cord itself, such as astrocytomas or ependymomas.

2.Extramedullary Tumors: Arise from the structures surrounding the spinal cord, including meningiomas, schwannomas, and neurofibromas.

3.Metastatic Tumors: Spinal cord tumors that result from the spread of cancer from other parts of the body.

Diagnosis

1.Medical History and Physical Examination: The process often begins with a thorough examination of the patient’s medical history and a physical examination to assess neurological function.

2.Imaging Studies: MRI and CT scans are commonly used to visualize the spinal cord and identify the location, size, and characteristics of the tumor.

3.Biopsy: A tissue sample may be obtained through biopsy for a definitive diagnosis, helping determine whether the tumor is benign or malignant.

Treatment

1.Surgery: Surgical removal of the tumor, when feasible, is a common approach to relieve pressure on the spinal cord and address symptoms.

2.Radiation Therapy: High-dose radiation may be employed to shrink or control the tumor, particularly for inoperable or residual portions after surgery.

3.Chemotherapy: Systemic or intrathecal chemotherapy may be used for certain tumor types, especially metastatic tumors.

4.Symptomatic Treatment: Managing symptoms such as pain, inflammation, and neurological deficits may involve medications, physical therapy, or other supportive measures
