Fertility Preservation

Department of Fertility Preservation

Fertility preservation protects your reproductive tissues so you can have a child in the future. People choose this treatment due to cancer and other health conditions, age and transgender care. Many people have healthy babies after fertility preservation treatment.

Before

Before undergoing Fertility Preservation, various tests may be conducted to assess the reproductive health of the individual. Common tests include:

1.Hormonal Assessments: Blood tests to measure reproductive hormones, such as Anti-Mullerian Hormone (AMH) and Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH), to assess ovarian reserve.

2.Infectious Disease Screening: Tests for infections such as HIV, hepatitis, and sexually transmitted infections to ensure the safety of stored reproductive materials.

Types

1.Egg Freezing (Oocyte Cryopreservation): Mature eggs are retrieved, frozen, and stored for future use. This is commonly done by vitrification, a rapid freezing technique.

2.Sperm Freezing (Sperm Cryopreservation): Sperm samples are collected, processed, and frozen for later use. Thawed sperm can be used for various assisted reproductive technologies.

3.Embryo Freezing (Embryo Cryopreservation): Fertilized eggs (embryos) resulting from in vitro fertilization (IVF) are frozen and stored for future use.

4.Ovarian Tissue Freezing: Involves removing and freezing a portion of ovarian tissue, which may later be transplanted or used for in vitro maturation.

Treatment

Fertility preservation is a process that has the potential to preserve a person’s ability to have a biological child in the future. This includes the freezing of healthy ovarian tissue and mature eggs for biological females and the freezing of healthy testicular tissue and mature sperm for biological males.
