Cryopreservation (Egg Freezing, Sperm Freezing)

Department of Cryopreservation (Egg Freezing, Sperm Freezing)

It is a procedure to preserve a woman’s reproductive cells or eggs by freezing and fertilizing them outside the woman’s body at a future opportune moment via assisted reproductive technology.

Before

Before undergoing Cryopreservation, which includes Egg Freezing and Sperm Freezing, various tests may be conducted to assess the individual’s reproductive health. Common tests for both Egg Freezing and Sperm Freezing include:

1.Blood Tests: Hormonal assessments, including Anti-Mullerian Hormone (AMH) for women and testosterone levels for men, to evaluate reproductive hormone levels.

2.Infectious Disease Screening: Tests for infections such as HIV, hepatitis, and sexually transmitted infections to ensure the safety of the stored reproductive materials.

3.Genetic Testing (Optional): Some individuals may opt for genetic testing to screen for hereditary conditions before freezing reproductive cells.

Types

1.Egg Freezing (Oocyte Cryopreservation): Mature eggs are retrieved, frozen, and stored for future use. This is commonly done by vitrification, a rapid freezing technique.

2.Sperm Freezing (Sperm Cryopreservation):  Sperm samples are collected, processed, and frozen for later use. Sperm freezing is a well-established technique, and thawed sperm can be used for various assisted reproductive technologies.

Treatment

The success rate depends on the quantity and quality of the eggs and their ages. Usually, the survival rate of frozen-thawed oocytes is around 80-90%. The success rate of fertilization is 70-80%. After successful fertilization, the embryo will let growing for another five days, reaching the blastocyst stage, which is suitable for implantation. The success rate of development to the blastocyst stage is around 60%.
