Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)

Department of Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)

For people experiencing infertility, intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) may lead to a successful pregnancy. This type of in vitro fertilization (IVF) is most helpful when there are male infertility issues. Your healthcare provider injects sperm into an egg to aid conception. Pregnancy may happen after an embryo transfer.

Before

Before undergoing Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI), various tests may be conducted to assess the overall health of both partners and ensure the success of the procedure. Common tests include:

1.Semen Analysis: Evaluates sperm count, motility, and morphology to assess the quality of sperm.

2.Hormonal Tests (e.g., Testosterone): Measures hormone levels to assess the male’s reproductive health.

3.Infectious Disease Screening: Tests for infections such as HIV, hepatitis, and sexually transmitted infections to ensure the safety of the procedure.

4.Ovarian Reserve Tests (for the Female Partner): Blood tests, including Anti-Mullerian Hormone (AMH) and Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH), to assess the quantity and quality of eggs.

Types

1.Conventional ICSI: The most common method where a single healthy sperm is selected and directly injected into a mature egg using a microneedle.

2.IMSI (Intracytoplasmic Morphologically Selected Sperm Injection): Utilizes advanced microscopy to select a sperm with optimal morphology for injection, aiming to improve fertilization rates.

3.PICSI (Physiological Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection): Involves selecting sperm based on their ability to bind to a hyaluronic acid substance, mimicking the natural selection process in the female reproductive tract.

Treatment

Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is an infertility treatment. It involves injecting live sperm into a person’s eggs in a laboratory. This procedure can create an embryo (fertilized egg). ICSI is a form of in vitro fertilization (IVF). Healthcare providers most commonly use ICSI when male infertility affects a person’s ability to conceive a child.
