Egg Retrieval (Oocyte Retrieval)

Department of Egg Retrieval (Oocyte Retrieval)

Oocyte retrieval is a procedure in which eggs are taken from your ovaries. It is one of the steps in the in-vitro fertilization (IVF) process. The procedure is usually done through the vagina. You will be sedated for the procedure. Once eggs are retrieved from the ovaries, they can be fertilized in a lab. The embryos can later be placed in your womb.

Before

Before undergoing Egg Retrieval (Oocyte Retrieval) as part of in vitro fertilization (IVF) or assisted reproductive technologies, several tests are typically conducted to assess the individual’s reproductive health. Here are common tests performed before Egg Retrieval:

1.Baseline Ultrasound: An initial ultrasound to assess the ovaries and uterus before starting ovarian stimulation medications.

2.Ovarian Reserve Tests: Blood tests, including Anti-Mullerian Hormone (AMH) and Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH), to evaluate the quantity and quality of eggs.

3. Infectious Disease Screening: Tests for infectious diseases such as HIV, hepatitis, and syphilis to ensure a safe procedure and prevent potential transmission.

4.Hormonal Assessments: Monitoring hormones like estrogen and progesterone levels during the menstrual cycle to plan the timing of Egg Retrieval.

5.Pelvic Examination: A physical examination to assess the health of the reproductive organs and identify any abnormalities.

6.Uterine Cavity Assessment (Hysteroscopy): A procedure to visualize the inside of the uterus, ensuring it’s suitable for embryo implantation.

7.Blood Type and Rh Factor Testing: Identifying blood type and Rh factor for compatibility if additional treatments are needed.

8.Semen Analysis (for Sperm Donors or Partner’s Sperm): Evaluation of sperm quality and quantity if using a partner’s or donor’s sperm.

Types

1.Transvaginal Oocyte Retrieval (TVOR): The most common method where a thin needle is passed through the vaginal wall to access and aspirate mature eggs from the follicles in the ovaries. This minimally invasive procedure is performed under ultrasound guidance.

Treatment

Eggs are removed from the ovaries approximately 36 hours after taking the hCG injection. If the patient regularly take any medications (allergy medication for example) they should talk with their doctor or nurse about taking the medication on the day of the egg retrieval.

The patient will be asked to not eat or drink as of midnight before the egg retrieval. During the egg retrieval procedure, they will receive a mild sedative through an IV, a small tube in a vein in the arm. This is a form of light general anesthesia where they will breathe on their own but will not feel the procedure nor remember it afterwards.

After they are sedated, the vagina is washed with a sterile water solution. A needle is placed under ultrasound guidance into the ovary and fluid, and eggs from the follicles in the ovaries are collected into a test tube and sent to the IVF lab.
